Watsu

Watsu® means Water Shiatsu, and is a gentle form of body therapy one to one and performed in warm water. This form of bodywork combines elements of massage, joint mobilization, shiatsu, muscle stretching, and dance, and is based on the principles of Zen Shiatsu.

In the ancient tradition of oriental healing ‘Chi’ is the life energy that exist in anyone, and the ‘Meridians’ are pathways for the circulation of the energy that were introduced by Shizuto Masunaga in the 1960’s as part of his approach to Shiatsu practice. When there is some blockage on these pathways, and the energy is not flowing properly, physical problems and even illnesses may arise.

Shiatsu practice aim to restore this circulation through the physical pressure of particular points on the body, and with gentle stretch and manipulation techniques, which will correct any imbalance and help the body to heal himself.

Shiatsu was adapted to be used in water by Shizuto Masunaga student Harold Dull in 1980, who created Watsu®.  A session of Watsu® is given in warm water, which helps to relax the muscles, where most of the meridians are located, and stimulates their function as energy catalysts.

During a Watsu® session the articulations are masaged and different intensity of pressure and stretches is applied on the meridian points, based on the body flexibility and the needs of the receiver on the day.

Been carried by the water and guided by the facilitator into gentle and fluid movements, helps to release physical and emotional stress in an organic and enjoyable way.

At same time Watsu® has evolved as a recognised therapeutic practice that includes deep understanding of body anatomy and physiotherapy.

A Watsu® session can be given to people with special needs, and to People with pathologies such as Parkinson's and Fibromyalgia, to stimulate the nervous system, release pain, and improve mobility, and to women with undergoing pregnancy to release stress and tension in the pelvic area and in the whole body.

Watsu®, and Aquatic Bodywork techniques, are a gentle and effective way to connect with the water element and with each other, and to enjoy the effects of water on our physical and emotional body.
